Jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald’s 96th birthday is celebrated with a Google Doodle depicting her performing. She recorded more than 200 albums, won 13 Grammys and recorded with many of the great figures of the era, such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong & Count Basie.

Happy St George’s Day! Despite him being England’s patron saint, and St George’s Day being celebrated on there on 23 April every year, St George has no direct relationship with England. He was Greek and became an officer in the Roman army, with the dragon episode placed somewhere in Libya. London also falls under the long list of his patronage.

Sir Norman Parkinson, British fashion photographer, is celebrated in Google doodle on what would have been his 100th birthday. His timeless innovative style is responsible for the look of Vogue in the mid 20th century and meant he was able to create icons all the up into his 60s.

Today’s Google Doodle is an interactive tribute to one of the funniest sci-fi novels ever — Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The English writer Douglas Adams, who was born on March 11, 1952, started the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as a radio play on BBC, and later developed it into a trilogy (though the novel act is in 5 parts).

The birthday of Miriam Makeba, the late Grammy Award-winning singer and civil rights campaigner, has been celebrated with a Google doodle. She was born in Johannesburg on 4 March, 1932. Nicknamed Mama Africa, she was the first artist to popularize African music in the 60s around the world after initially singing jazz. In 1962, she performed at President John F Kennedy’s birthday party. She also performed with artists such as Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon and Hugh Masekela, her first husband. Other husbands included Stokely Carmichael, a leading member of the American Black Panther movement. In 1960, the South African government cancelled her passport to prevent her returning to her home from her travels overseas. She returned after the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990. She died in 2008 following a heart attack during a concert in Italy organized to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra mafia organization. RIP Mama Africa. We are forever grateful for your activism and the legacy you have left behind.

Google celebrates 88th birthday of cult author and illustrator Edward Gorey. Gorey, who died in April 2000 at the age of 75, was known for often macabre drawings and picture-stories resulting in a worldwide cult following. The Google Doodle features his surreal cartoonish style. Gorey’s work inspired the film director Tim Burton and the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails.

Happy St Andrew’s Day! Google pays tribute to Scotland with a Doodle depicting Lion Rampant & thistles. St Andrew is also the patron saint of fishmongers, singers, spinsters, maidens, old maids and women wishing to become mothers. He was crucified in Patras, Greece, by the Romans on a X-shaped cross, the diagonal shape of which is said to be the basis for the Cross of St Andrew, which appears on the Saltire.
